I had a question for a very seasoned elk hunter, Brian Huskey, about elk, and I was amazed by his answer. You ever gotten a Roosevelt Elk? Speaker2: No. However, when I grew up in central Oregon, I harvested a couple of elk that I think biologists would describe as potentially kind of a hybrid mix of Roosevelt and Rocky Mountain Elk. But I can't say that I have specifically hunted the pure Pacific Coast breed of Roosevelt Elk. Now. Speaker1: The interesting thing about that is, is that I have a friend who runs an outfitting service and he lives in Oregon. He almost exclusively deals with Roosevelt, says they are west of the I-5, between the I-5 and the coast and heavy forested areas, both in Washington State and in Oregon. Speaker2: Sure. Yep. I think that you could argue that there are Roosevelt also east of I-5, up into the Cascade Mountains, and they kind of trickle over. Of course, that line is going to wander on the boundary of which different species you have. But you bet. Yeah. Speaker1: When you say you thought that you had a hybrid, they don't intermix. Speaker2: I think that they actually kind of might. I'm not a biologist and I can't say for certain, but I believe I'd heard that kind of discussed that Rocky Mountain Elk and Roosevelt elk will interbreed. Speaker1: Okay, I guess it's kind of like a donkey father and a horse mother coming up with a mule.
