It’s time for your Southeast Regional Ag News. On the Ag Information Network, I’m Haylie Shipp.

We are continuing our conversation today with Marcia Bunger, Administrator of the USDA’s Risk Management Agency.

Recently I had a chance to talk to Administrator Bunger about her first year of service and she talked exclusively about a couple of insurance options that they have tweaked based on producer concerns.

Yesterday we chatted about the Whole-Farm Revenue Protection policy. Today it’s about Micro Farm…

“And Micro Farm is very new. Last year was the inception of the rollout of the policy. And this is really geared toward small farms.”

The cap on this program had been $100,000 but they more than tripled that level to $350,000...

“There’s a lot of people that are just enough over that $100,000 mark that we felt it was a good decision to move it to that $350,000. We are seeing quite a bit of interest with specialty crop growers with that Micro Farm policy, those customers that grow and take it from food-to-table type of concepts, with food stands, we’re looking at encouraging urban ag to also consider at this type of policy and also organic.”

November 15 and December 13, they will be hosting some virtual workshops talking about these products. If you want to take part, just go to the USDA’s RMA website and look up “RMA Road Show.”
