CA Cattle Producers… Stay Vigilant in this Heat
Although California livestock producers are used to the effects summer heat has on their animals… taking that extra step and preparing for higher temps could be the difference between life and death… literally. And the current heat wave beating down on midwestern states serves as a grave reminder.
Karla Jenkins Nebraska Extension range management cow-calf specialist says calves need some special attention during this time.
“Heat stress is a very real thing, even in a nursing calf… when its horribly hot, it’s very easy for a baby calf to dehydrate… if they can’t reach the water tank.”
This year temperatures went from cold to hot and the cows and calves haven't had time to acclimate. Jenkins adds along with adequate water, and shade if possible, would also help the pairs in keeping heat stress at bay.
