When I think of cranberries, I associate them with bogs in New England…Cape Cod. But not so much…cranberries are grown in Oregon. Not just a seasonal berry, the cranberry is in the spotlight during the holidays. Behind it all is an industry that is important to Oregon’s south coast economy: Perhaps under appreciated the rest of the year, the cranberry is a must have for the holidays, says Oregon Department of Agriculture Trade Development Manager Theresa Yoshioka: “Oregon produces many berries and cranberry is one of our wonderful berries. It’s the last berry of the season. Throughout the summer, we enjoy many types of berries. Then in the fall, we have our cranberries. I think in most of the world, people care and are paying more attention to what they eat, and they are looking for healthy options. Cranberries are definitely one of those types of healthy foods. We see demand increasing in many markets around the world and, of course, in the US. We are a cranberry state. We are, I think, fourth in the nation in production of cranberries. A lot of people don’t realize it because it’s not grown near population centers. Our cranberries are grown down in the South Coast area. Cranberries are one of the healthy, nutrient dense elements in our Thanksgiving dinner. But, we could also be enjoying those healthy berries throughout the year.”
