The California Invasive Plant Council and the UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program have developed two resources to provide land managers access to information on non-herbicide weed management practices. The two resources are a free downloadable manual and an interactive online tool called the Weed Control User Guide or WeedCUT for short. Jutta Burger is the science program director for the California Invasive Plant Council.

Burger… “There is a lot of concern and growing concern and the public about the use of herbicides out there, both in agriculture and natural lands and in urban environments. However, it's really hard to find clear guidelines for how to use which non-herbicide techniques for which species, how well they work, let alone how effective they are under different conditions and how much they cost and what risks they have. So there's a pretty well-developed protocol and set of guidelines for herbicides, but there's not really anything out there for non-herbicide techniques. So we wanted to fill that void to allow people to make more informed decisions in controlling weeds out there.”

If you’re looking for more information on non-chemical weed control, download the manual or use the interactive WeedCUT tool on the UCANR website.
