Florida Citrus Report
The Florida Dept of Agriculture and Consumer Services released its annual citrus report for 2019-2020. The United States citrus industry for 2019-2020 season totaled 7.78 million tons. California was the top producing state, with 54 percent of total the United States citrus production, while Florida came in second with 42 percent of production.
Florida’s share of U.S. citrus production in 2019-2020 is 5% lower than last year's count, at 73.2 million boxes. All orange production is down 6% from the previous year as well.
Florida accounts for 4.85 million boxes of grapefruit, which is up 8%, and Tangerine production in 2019-2020 is up 3 percent from the previous season.
Area and county production's ****top 5 citrus-producing counties were Polk, DeSoto, Highlands, Hendry, and Hardee counties. Together these counties account for 70 percent of the state’s total citrus production. Central FL had the most citrus production and oranges constituted 92 percent of the citrus production there.
Estimates of county production are prepared from survey data used in forecasting citrus crop production. The apportionment of the final harvest to the counties is based on bearing trees, an estimate of the average fruit per tree, and the drop and size surveys. The sample size used in these surveys is chosen to minimize error in the estimates of production.
