Permit fish

A chat with Kent Goodman about permits. “I’m big on permit fishing on the flats with a fly rod. I have caught a bunch of them over 16 years of flats fishing but this last trip I got my biggest one. 31 pounds. I’ve been in the 20s and teens, I guess my average is about 12 pounds in permits. It’s the only fish I keep track of every one that I have caught. Where it was, what it ate, the date, the weight and I just have a log. They are neat fish and they are hard to come by. We were fishing in Mexico, a hosted trip through got fishing. I was the host and we were at La Pesca Dora Lodge on Ascension Bay. There were eight anglers in the group and it was the fourth day of the trip. We were floating down a flat and I was fishing with a guide named Roto. Super good guide. He spotted a couple of fish coming on the flat. The water wasn’t completely clear but you could see the fish. We were in about four or 5 feet of water. I cast in front of the first fish and that’s when I got him, 31 pounds.
