On Wednesday, a bi-partisan group of U.S. senators including Montana’s Jon Tester and Steve Daines, South Dakota’s John Thune and Mike Rounds and New Jersey’s Cory Booker introduced a resolution to support country of origin labeling for beef products in the U.S. in an effort to provide critical support to American cattle producers hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fred Wacker is president of the Montana Stockgrowers Association from Miles City and explains why MSGA is supporting it.

“Our members have expressed enormous support for a program which allows for the preservation and protection of beef using the “USA” label and allows consumers to have a clear choice between “USA” beef and “Non-USA” beef,” said MSGA President, Fred Wacker.

The resolution urges the President to require the U.S. Trade Representative to enter into the necessary trade negotiations to allow the U.S. to re-implement mandatory country of origin labeling in a manner that’s compliant with WTO regulations.

Montana congressman Greg Gianforte has also sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to find a meaningful solution to allow “Product of the USA” labeling on U.S. beef.
