Elk vs deer hunts

Brian Huskey had successful deer and elk seasons this year. So I asked him to compare and contrast the hunt for each animal.

Comparing and contrasting deer hunting and elk hunting for me begins with the fact that I typically deer hunt with a rifle and elk hunt with a bow. Elk hunting with a bow there's a great amount of strategy and effort that's involved in the audio, in the verbal conversations that elk have with themselves and using that to my advantage, as a hunter. To not only locate where elk are at, but of course engage in a dialogue with them in calling and speaking with them in order to get within a close enough range, let's say 50 yards that a bow is an effective weapon. Mule deer, on the other hand, do very little vocalization. They do some, but very little comparatively. Mule deer bucks are extremely smart and savvy. That is until they go into the rut when they are interested in breeding during the time that mule deer bucks are in the rut, which may overlap with many rifle seasons. They actually become very, very dumb and are focused entirely on pursuing does that are in heat. And that is true across the entire animal kingdom.
