Talk about always looking at the glass as being half full instead of half-empty, otherwise known as an optimist, regular contributor Josh Mills was on a fall turkey hunt in Spokane and ran across a flock of birds. In his words he stealthily crawled up to a tree, hid there until a bird came within 30 yards, he edged his gun out around the tree and pulled the trigger… All to no avail. A whiff, a miss, de nada, zero, you know what I’m talking about. But not to get all down in the mouth and depressed… “I just couldn’t believe that I had used a shotgun to miss a turkey 30 yards away. I was absolutely beside myself. I had been going through this bad streak in hunting and fishing where nothing had gone right and I couldn’t believe I had missed. So as disgusted as I have ever been I at least took a little solace in understanding that when you bust up a big flock of turkeys, they want to get back together. I put my stuff on and started walking down this ridge. 10 minutes later there were another 15 birds feeding like nothing had ever happened. This time I used the hill as cover, slid around the backside and got into position next to a downed tree which provided a lot of cover. This time they came right to me and the hunting God smiled upon me as a nice big Jake appeared within a shooting window of about 15 yards. After a quick and measured shot I had Thanksgiving dinner.
