Let’s say you are thinking about building some fantastic new widget in your garage. That is where the whole Apple empire was conceived and started. But before you get to work, surely the most prominent question in your mind is how am I going to get the word out? Another word for that question is marketing. You know your product is something everybody can use but how do you let them know it is available? Well, farmers and ranchers know all too well that people need their product… each and every day. We all have to eat. And increasingly agricultural producers are seeking innovative ways to market what they grow. In an effort to help this process, An annual direct marketing summit brings stakeholders in such venues as farmers markets together to learn the various ways for producers to sell their goods to consumers. Dave Carter of the National Bison Association was one of the attendees at this year's summit in Chicago.

The summit, co-sponsored by U.S. the A's Agricultural Marketing Service that brings together folks from all over the country who were involved in just a whole myriad of aspects of direct marketing. Farmers markets on farm sales, agritourism, farm to school. So the information that's there was really helpful. A lot of stuff on particularly legal tool kit for running farmers markets and thoughts about identifying customers for direct sales.

Carter explains what these connections and resources of information mean to specialty and niche producers like those in the bison industry.

That's very important because the majority of our members are small rancher marketers. So the more that we can pick up this information and the more helpful it is.
