September is National Preparedness Month

September has been deemed National Preparedness Month. Do you and your family have a plan in place in case of disaster? Most of us are guilty of thinking that disasters only occur in other locations, far away. Just having a discussion with your family helps in being prepared for what might occur.
Yakima County Emergency Services Public Information Officer Kent Catlin provides additional information about what your family can do to prepare for the unexpected.
Catlin: “The first part is knowing what kind of local disasters you face in your area. Then once you understand what those are, making appropriate plans to respond to them. How would your family communicate after the disaster takes place? Where would you go if you had to leave your home? If you had to do an invacuation, what routes would you take? Knowing and having the information in hand of important documentation of deeds, wills, prescriptions that you have and having those ready to go to take with you. Having enough food and water stored in case it was a matter of you having sheltering in place at your home for weeks at a time at your residence.”
We will continue our conversation with Catlin tomorrow and discuss what additional information is needed when you have livestock to consider.
