Profanity Peak Wolf Pack in the News

Profanity Peak Wolf Pack in the News

I’ve been reporting on wolves and their relationship with livestock and ranchers for a while now. One thing I’ve learned from my many interviews with ranchers from around the region is — they are willing to play by the rules set out by state agencies as long as those rules aren’t changed or altered mid-stream.

Recently the Profanity Peak wolf pack — located in Northeastern Washington — has been in the news as in mid-July the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that pack member of the Profanity Peak pack had killed or injured six cattle and most likely five others as well.

Washington Cattlemen’s Association Executive Vice President Jack Field says ranchers appreciate the department following through on plan that has been put in place.

Field: “The Department of Fish and Wildlife has been following the protocols and recommendations that came out of the Wolf Advisory Group in regards to information exchange, and the process and protocol that the Department would follow in the case of depredation. Then once they triggered those four depredations, the process in regards to the DFW initiating removal of problem wolves. So thus far, I can tell you that the process is working as we would assume they would according to the protocols.”

WDFW staff have killed six of the 11 members of the pack as of a week ago.
