No Dumping Duties on Exports of Washington Apples to Mexico

With the Fruit Grower Report, I'm Susan Allen. Good news for our region's apples growers on Tuesday when Mexico's Ministry of Economy made a decision on the antidumping case filed by US growers saying that United States did not cause injury to their domestic industry so it terminated the antidumping investigation on imports of U.S. apples meaning there are no antidumping duties, or taxes. Todd Fryhover, President, Washington Apple Commission:

Fryhover: Mexico is Washington State's largest apple market so obliviously it's very significant if there is any kind of duty associated with making shipments to Mexico. You know the real winner if you really think about it, in this whole process is the Mexican consumer. The Mexican economy has devalued lately against the US dollar and we have seen our shipments go down because we have had a smaller crop than the previous year so our prices are higher so the inability to have a duty on our product provides the Mexican consumer with more apples at reasonable prices.

It isn't just our apples that benefit, cherries are a top export to Mexico as well

Fryhover: Absolutely! I think you will also find that it's a great pear market so when you look at the state of Washington being apple, pears and cherries the number one commodities in the United States focused right here in the state of Washington Mexico is a very integral part to all of our export opportunities.

The positive outcome was due in part to Northwest Fruit Exporters the organization involved in coordinating industry defense efforts.
