I got a marketing piece talking about flavoring plastic worms. I didn't know if it was hokum so I called Marvin Reese who is a sales associate at Sportsman's Warehouse. "Field & Stream Sugar Stix utilize new technology to put a new twist on the flavor-infused soft plastic worm. Each worm bait is infused with sugar to bring about strikes with technology that is proven to offer the same sink rate as salt-infused baits. Field & Stream™ Sugar Stix Soft Baits use their soft, pliable material to create a natural presentation in the water with a new taste that sweetens the deal and entices more strikes. Does that make sense to you? Yes a little bit. Most of those scents, and it sounds like that is one of them, are water-based. When that hits the water, guess what happens to it. Furthermore, we have more taste buds than bass. Trout is pretty much the same. So the question is, why do we use this stuff? As much as anything, it is to mask what they might react negatively to. Otherwise it has to be pretty much oil in order to work. That is based on 60 years of doing this. So you are saying it is part masking, part marketing and part luck? Luck is always a part of it, certainly. But with bass fishing I have always said it is about 75% knowing what you are doing and the rest is luck. Any given day, somebody can show up and put you to shame.
