Apple Sales On Target

Apple Sales On Target. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

The 2015 apple crop has been selling nicely and I recently noticed a great deal of variety in my local produce department. Todd Fryhover, President of the Washington Apple Commission.

FRYHOVER: And that's going to continue, Greg, as you know, the varieties that are being planted that aren't the big three, they're the new varieties. Not only Gala's and Fuji's and the varieties that we have been accustomed to over the last decade or even longer but these new varieties that are out that provide a different taste and texture for the consumer it's really a fascinating time in our industry and I personally believe that consumption is going to be driven by these new varieties and in addition, the better care and handling that our industry has taken upon themselves with these new packing lines that are going into place and making sure that they're doing a better job every single day.

He says that sales are on target.

FRYHOVER: Year-to-date sales are actually right on target. The industry is moving at almost exactly the pace that they need to move. Interest domestically is very strong. This last two week period we had a strong interest from international markets but we are off 30% compared to last year but if you look back to last year we had our largest crop in history.

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
