Solving Immigration

Solving Immigration

Solving Immigration. I'm Greg Martin with Washington Ag Today.

One of the things that the President didn't get into during his State of the Union Address was the need for immigration reform. Congressman Dan Newhouse from Washington feels this is one of the most important issues we face.

NEWHOUSE: It was part of laundry list of things that he listed quickly at the beginning of his speech and then didn't spend any time on it and I think that's one of the biggest issues that we face. Unfortunately, I've gotta say and I've said this before that some of his executive actions he's take actually has made it more difficult for us to move forward on immigration reform.

Newhouse says that's something he was hoping could have been accomplished during his first year in Congress.

NEWHOUSE: Now with the Presidential campaigns going I think realistically getting a lot of things accomplished in immigration is going to be that much more difficult. But that doesn't mean that mean we won't get some things. I think the President has hopefully made clear that he would be willing to act positively on some immigration changes if we could get them to him.

Realistically, he says it is getting harder and harder to move things forward.

NEWHOUSE: The good thing is, Greg, that there are still a lot of people here in Congress that feel the same way, that want to move something forward and we need to. Not only for our agricultural industry but for our communities and for our country
