Good Ag Practices Meeting

Good Ag Practices Meeting. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

Global GAP is a fairly new deal that is becoming very important and the Washington State Tree Fruit Association wants to make sure you are prepared. Nicole Brunner, Director of Education & Member Services talks about the upcoming Global GAP seminar.

BRUNNER: December 2nd, 3rd and 4th here in Wenatchee at the Apple Commission Annex, we have a Global GAP version 5 workshop coming up for growers. Also included we'll have some farm assurers, retailers, certification bodies, anybody deal with fruit and vegetables and need to comply with on-farm audits. The workshop will prepare these growers with the practices and documentation necessary to pass one of the third party good agricultural practices audits.

You can register online at globalgap.com. Brunner talks about why Global GAP is so important.

BRUNNER: It started back in January 2011 when Obama passed the Food Safety Modernization Act. It was to implemented the laws on good agricultural practices on food safety so that we could ensure that our product was safe. And now as of just last Friday the produce safety rule came out so us growers in Washington State, we pretty much have been implementing and doing Global GAP since 2009.
