Reclaimed Water Rule

Reclaimed Water Rule

Reclaimed Water Rule. I'm Greg Martin with Washington Ag Today.

Water is quickly becoming more precious than gold or diamonds but a new rule hopes to help reclaim some lost water. Dennis McDonald is the Reclaimed Water Rural Coordinator with the Washington State Department of Ecology and he talks about the proposed reclaimed water rule.

MCDONALD: It's a new rule that the legislature finally asked ecology and the Department of Health to write rules that would provide efficient and consistent standards and permit requirements to address the production, distribution and encourage beneficial uses of reclaimed water.

McDonald explains what reclaimed water consists of.

MCDONALD: It is water that has been treated by a wastewater treatment plant. Reclaimed water is further treatment that makes sure that is consistent quality and at a level that can be used for beneficial uses, short of potable water.

Mostly it could be used for irrigation. He talks about where the process is.

MCDONALD: We started June 22nd a 60-day comment period. The public comment period will end August 21stand in the meantime July 21st and 23rd we're holding public hearings. After that the next step would be to compile all the comments that we receive and also respond to all the comments and then make a presentation to the Director of Ecology for adoption.

And that's Washington Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
