Encourage Young People to Be Involved in Beef Industry

Last week was the 2015 Cattle Industry Convention and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Trade Show in San Antonio, Texas. The outgoing NCBA President Bob McCan says his time as president has been a good ride and the future remains bright for the beef industry.
McCan: “We’ve got so many technological advances in this industry. Advances that they’ve done in livestock breeding. And of course with Social Media and different avenues of being able to promote our product — we are making great advances there. International trade is one of our big opportunities. We’ve advanced our international trade every year for the past couple of years — every since the BSE cow. it’s gone a long ways to help stabilize our market prices for cattle and livestock. We still have a lot of opportunities to open some of these markets.”
McCan encourages young producers to step up and get involved
McCan: “The average age of the cattle producer is 57. We need to get more of these young producers involved. We’ve got a couple of different programs going - our Young Beef Leader program and the Young Cattlemen Conference that we do every year to get these folks in and get them interested. We do everything we can. And we try to involve them with all the committees we can and all the different task forces we try and get some of the young leaders involved there.”
