Big Convention

Big Convention

Big Convention. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

The 2014 Hort Convention is in the record books on several levels. First, it was the largest gathering of both attendees and vendors ever. It was the first time the event was held in the Tri-Cities and it was the last event for the Washington State Horticultural Association which is being merged into the new Washington State Tree Fruit Association. WSTFA President, Jon DeVaney was on hand.

DEVANEY: It's the last under the name of the Hort Association but this is a merger of organizations so is going to be continuity and we're going to have a similar program next year and we're going to try to keep everything that has been good about the current Hort Associations conventions and annual meetings but still try to have continuous improvement as well.

DeVaney talks about the new Tri-Cities venue for the show.

DEVANEY: Of course there's a lot more production in the Basin than there was a hundred years ago and there's a lot of advantages to being on a rotating schedule to different production areas. Some folks really like it when it's close to home because they can stay in their own bed at night but a lot of folks find it's a lot easier to focus on the conference itself when they're not tempted to run back to their desks and finish up some work. So I think that this location has been a nice change for a lot of folks.

Final numbers for the show will be released in a couple of days and we'll have more with Jon DeVaney tomorrow.

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
