3-6 IAN Do Something

We have to do something and do it fast. There is a national tide rolling in and it is truly concerning given that it is attacking agriculture. Here is an example. Chipotle has trumpeted an advertising campaign called “Farmed and Dangerous.” “Much of our marketing is aimed at making consumers more curious about where their food comes from and how it is prepared,” says Mark Crumpacker, chief marketing and development officer at Chipotle. “By making complex issues about food production more understandable, we are reaching people who have not typically been tuned into these types of issues.”

The other day I open the paper and there is in the front section a full-page ad that says “Drug abuse is everywhere”. There is a picture of a wild eyed and obviously horrifyingly stressed cow that is bawling. It looks like a ruminant version of what went on at Auschwitz. The byline is “Trader Joe’s, be an industry leader: get your meat off antibiotics.” It goes on saying the overuse of antibiotics is causing these precious medications to lose their ability to treat lethal infections. 80% of antibiotics sold in the US are used on farm animals who are not sick. The attacks keep coming against beef, dairy, pork, chicken, GMO crops. We have to do something.
