Boyd on wolves.

I had an interesting conversation the other day with Stan Boyd, Executive Director of the Idaho Wool Growers Association, and we both wondered out loud how we could reduce predation on Stan’s favorite animal to say nothing of cattle, ungulates, bears and other forms of wildlife. “We look forward to a strong working relationship with everybody involved in this process to help manage these wolf populations. As a guy who sits on the sidelines and talks with damaged sheep ranchers, and with no disrespect to environmental movements, but how justify not wanting to manage a population of animals that devastate livestock, devastate ungulates and are basically at the top of the food chain, left unchecked, simply will multiply beyond our capability to contain them? I have never figured out their thought process, I figure you’ll just have to ask those folks. I agree. It is beyond comprehension to think that we were going to reintroduce wolf populations in the state of Idaho and not have to manage them. By manage I mean kill them. You have to use lethal measures to keep that population within a manageable group. If you don’t, their populations become so large and they lack the prey base and they will come down and foray into agricultural areas and that is where they really start to cause damage.”
