Fruit Year In Review Part 3. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

The last thing a wine grape grower want to hear is about a new disease that is making its way around vineyards. Naidu Rayapati, Associate Professor of Virology at WSU.

RAYAPATI: It's new in the sense we have been observing these symptoms even before but we were under the impression this was part of the leaf roll disease complex. But now we realize as we did some additional research that some of these symptoms are not entirely because of leaf roll disease.

There have been some very interesting hybrid fruits over the years. Some more novelty than practical but a new cherry-plum hybrid began making waves this past year according to Alan Taylor, marketing director for Brandt 's Fruit Trees.

TAYLOR: It has the characteristics of both a cherry and a plum although if you see it I think the cherry part is much more dominant in terms of the shape of it and it's certainly larger than a normal cherry. It has a little shorter stem than a cherry.

The 2013 cherry season got under way and NW Cherries BJ Thurlby talked about the changing trends in the industry.

THURLBY: Where not seeing the trends that we saw 10 years ago of apple acreage being pulled out and cherries going in. In fact I would even go as far as to say that some of the older cherry orchards that I know of have actually gone into newer varieties of apples.

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
