Reducing Risk of BRD in Calves- Continued

Yesterday we began a conversation with Dr. Andy Allen from the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine Washington State University about Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex or BRD and the steps ranchers can take to reduce the risk of BRD in their herds.

Dr. Allen explains that at the WSU Veterinary Extension website there are online tools available for ranchers to learn more.

Allen: “You can find a series of fact sheets that go into the different risk factors for Bovine Respiratory Disease and how to prevent it on the farm. There are also a series of presentations that have been made based from those fact sheets that you can go and watch a presentation.”

In addition to fact sheets, there is also an online assessment that ranchers can take.

Allen: “Basically it is an informative test that producers can take. What it does is allow them to see if they have any of these risk factors that lead to increased BRD in their animals. Basically they go through it, they are taking a test and they find out whether their practices are risky. It also gives them information on how to avoid those practices.”

There will be several educational seminars happening around Washington State in the next four or five months. To find out more go to www.extension.wsu.edu/vetextension
