8-14 SS Duck Calls
Sportsman’s Warehouse sales associate Ben Doherty knows a lot about duck calls and has some great advice for beginning duck hunters. “Let’s say that I am a beginning duck hunter. Walk me through what you would say to somebody who was trying to buy a duck call as a beginner. First thing I would say is that you want a double reed call. The sound is going to be closer to a duck releasing a sound if you are just blowing into it. The single reeds are a little bit harder to control, the double reeds are better for a duck caller. You do not need to go out and buy expensive acrylic calls. They are more difficult to blow into and to control. There is just such a big variety these days. But definitely start with a double reed. If I am using a double reed, it is easier to learn on it and it is easier to simulate a duck call. Does that equate to not being as convincing as a single reed to a duck who happens to be flying by? Not necessarily. What I have noticed with the calls is that you get the sound that you want by practice. But there are calls that put off sound that are so realistic to ducks calling that you do not have to go out and spend that extra money on them. They just keep getting better and better. It really has to do with practice and getting that true sound down because you have to realize that there are 1000 guys calling at the same duck every day.
