Apple Scholarships

Apple Scholarships. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

Each year the Washington Apple Education Foundation presents scholarships to kids tied to the apple industry. Executive Director of WAEF, Jennifer Witherbee explains.

WITHERBEE: It was an amazing scholarship year. This year we were so excited to award the scholarships that we got to award. This year WAEF scholarship recipients are receiving about $200-thousand dollars more than they did the prior year. We get to help about 165 student by the time we finish our summer renewals this year. The average award went up and it’s about $3500.

Witherbee talks about how students can apply for next years scholarships.

WITHERBEE: Students applied to us this year through the WashBoard and the WashBoard is an online resource and it was the first year for us to use an online application. Students need to have a tie to the tree fruit industry and usually that is because their parents are employed in the industry. For some of the awards they are specific to certain high schools and those are high schools that are in tree fruit growing areas.
