USPB US Fortified Granular Potatoes Used for Food Aid

The United States Potato Board has assisted in making fortified granular potatoes available for World Food Aid organizations. Last year USDA made its first purchase of granules to be used in school feeding programs in Cameroon.

UPSB International Marketing Vice President John Toaspern says the USPB assisted in the training of the trainers of the cooks and parents on how to best use the granules as many people are unfamiliar with the product in Cameroon.

Toaspern: "There was a lot of discussion on the nutritional component so they understood how it should fit into the meals. What can be used with it, to complement green vegetables or local vegetables or little bit of peas or something like that to add a bit more protein and then you have a complete meal. Then also hands-on training on how to rehydrate it properly -- you don’t want to whisk it up too much. There are certain things you need to do so it comes out tasting better and a better consistency. She was over there for a week training the trainers.”

Toaspern adds that  in addition to be fortified the granules are very light weight and convenient.
