I’m KayDee Gilkey with today’s Northwest Farm and Ranch Report.

Happy Ag Day! Today is the day we all can recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by agriculture.

I visited with Washington State University ag business major and freshman, Jenica Hagler who is in Washington,D.C. today celebrating Ag Day on Capitol Hill as part of more than 100 students from across the country. Hagler gives more details about Ag Day.

Hagler: “It is an event celebrated not only here in D.C. but across the country. Just an opportunity to celebrate American agriculture and all the things we are able to do. We feed so many people. Americans spend the least amount of their income on food which is great. We have really great things about agriculture to celebrate. So every year in the spring we have Ag Day and they celebrate here on the hill. There is plenty of activities but the youth being here speaking to our legislators and sharing our messages is one of the big events.”

As an Idaho native, Hagler will be visiting with both of her Idaho Congressmen today sharing her positive message about agriculture.

I’ll close with an interesting Ag Fact: It takes just 40 days for most Americans to earn enough money to pay for their food supply for the entire year. In comparison with the 129 days it takes the average American to earn enough money to pay federal, state and local taxes for the year.
