Tips for Fall Planting

I’m KayDee Gilkey with the Northwest Farm and Ranch Report.

This time of year wheat farmers are busy planting winter wheat. According to the National Ag Statistics Services Crop Progress Reports: Washington has 70 percent of their Winter Wheat planted, Idaho has 30 percent completed and Oregon has 18 percent planted.

Syngenta Agronomy Field Representative Don Drader says although it is really dry in much of the Pacific Northwest most wheat farmers are busy either planting or preparing their ground.

Drader: “The thing that growers should be aware of at this time of year. They should be looking at the weeds that they have out in their fields maybe be looking at a burn down of the weeds of a Glyphosate product like Touchdown or if they have Glyphosate-resistance they may be looking at Gramoxone SL 2.0 which is a quicker burn down. With either of these two products because it is so dry they probably need to be sure that they have very good coverage in their application. The addition of Ammonium Sulfate during that application would is helpful in these dry conditions. Ten to 15 gallons of water would be the minimal amount I would put on with a ground application.

Drader also says that it is important to consider the green tissue in their fallow fields.

Drader: “That green tissue is frequently called a green bridge of disease from one crop to the next. So desecrating it with Gramoxone or Touchdown right now would be very beneficial to the growers.”
