Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. Kay Teisl, Executive Director of the Oregon Cattlemen's Association, says people helping people is what farmers are all about. And a recent photo of 17 hay trucks proves the point.

TEISL: When the fires broke out in July the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association president and board could see that there was a real need for emergency assistance at the rate those fires were growing in acreage. We have over a million acres now that’s been burnt by wildfires in Oregon and so we established a fire victims relief fund in our stewardship fund.

They started receiving a lot of contributions including cash and in-kind donations.

TEISL: Part of that in-kind was the hay being donated. And then once we saw that we had so much hay donated we kind of put the word out that we needed help transporting that hay so then we went forward organizing this effort to get this hay on the ground to folks that really needed it.

She says this particular donation was around 500 tons of hay totaling with delivery and loading over $115-thousand dollars.

TEISL: And that’s kind of the ranching heritage is neighbors helping neighbors and that’s just what they do and what they’re used to doing when you see a situation like that, people really step up and it’s pretty refreshing.

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m Susan Allen.
