6-26 IAN Cowboy Poet
There is nothing like the real thing. Would you like to meet a real cowboy. I’ve got not only that, but a Cowboy poet to boot. Steve Ritter is a good friend of mine and a lot of you folks out there as well. He is a very good reporter and photographer who works for the Idaho Farm Bureau. He did a story on an 87-year-old cowboy named Jim Davis. Steve told me to call Jim up because he loves to BS and tell stories. So I called this cowboy poet and listen to what I heard: “Sam Jackson was running for sheriff,
It was coming right down to the wire
He sent me out to canvass the farmers
To see what they might desire
Now I came upon this old farmer
Told him Sam Jackson was fearless and bold
He said I’ll tell you bout that Sam Jackson
And this is the story he told”
I asked Jim if he was a real cowboy indeed and also how did he get into poetry? “I’ve been accused of wearing out more saddles than most people have worn out car tires. My great uncle was a cowboy poet in Montana and he published a book of poems in
1930. So it is in your blood? I guess so.
