Greenpeace takes on JBS
Hi I’m Susan Allen, I have always tended to associate the environmental group Greenpeace with protecting marline life like whales and seals but it appears they have added a new focus, saving the Brazilian rain-forest and in doing so they have engaged battle with one of the worlds largest meat packers . Stay tuned for the Open Range Report. In 2009 Greenpeace published a scathing report titled “Slaughtering the Amazon” blaiming cattle ranching for prime cause of rain forest deforestation. The report was circulated to supermarket chains and leather-good manufactures and like we have in the U.S. especially regarding fast food outlets and gestation pen sizes, these tactics worked so well that mega meat packing conglomerate JBS and other Brazilin packers agreed to stop buying cattle from farms that destroyed rain forests. According to Greenpeace JBS agreed to develop some sort of a tracking system that would enable meat packing companies to blacklist cattle ranches that continued to log rainforests. A year later all of the packers involved requested more time yet to complete the mapping yet to date it remains unfinished. On the cattle website Drovers Greenpeace claims that recent investigations found JBS purchasing cattle from farms that illegally occupy indigenous lands and in even from farms accused of slave labor. JBS denies this allegation and is planning legal action but Fox Business News recently reported that companies like Adidas AG, IKEA and grocery chains in the U.K. have canceled their business with Brazil-based meat company.
