12-5 IAN Sue Wallis Back
If you want to get a lot of reaction to a story, do a story on slaughtering horses and Sue Wallis. I have talked so many times over the years with Sue Wallis who is an advocate for slaughtering horses. This subject is a very hot potato and Sue makes a lot of sense in her logic. Now that legislation has been signed lifting the federal ban on horse slaughter - the focus among horse groups is finding suitable plants for processing. Sue Wallis - co-leader of United Horsemen and the International Equine Business Association - says they have a great network across the country looking for facilities in places where meat processing is common practice. “Those facilities that already exist that are already processing like mammals and that could be relatively quickly retrofitted for the unique characteristics of horses.”
Wallis says the horse processing facilities that were shuttered in 2007 when amendments passed banning the USDA from inspecting horse meat will not be reopened because the states where they are located - Texas, Illinois, California and Florida - have passed laws banning horse slaughter.
