6-21 IAN Idaho Ark
Eavesdropping on a water conversation.
To repeat for the umpteenth time we might start thinking about building an ark in Idaho. Listen into a conversation I had with Ron Abramovich of the NRCS. “That’s how Lookout Pass was up here. They had the greatest snowfall that week and that includes around the world. So that is their claim to fame this year. Somebody had that analysis on the world wide web. The biggest dump for the week was right here in Idaho. They were pushing 60 inches that week. Silver Mountain is closed during the week days so they don’t get to count their inches. So Ron, what in the world is going on? There’s a lot going on here. Some places in eastern Idaho are just now reaching their snow peak water content for the season. It’s amazing to have it peaking this late in June. There is 6 feet of snow, that’s 70 inches of water just waiting to melt. All of the fly fisherman our whining and crying because the rivers are rushing. Right. The Teton River near Driggs doesn’t peak until grand Targee is half melted and that won’t occur until late June or early July when we see the streamflow peak on the Teton River. Our streams are going to be high the rest of the summer all the way into August and September. Usually I watch the Owayhee River as an example to see what happens and the Idaho southern streams just are not decreasing.
