U.S. House ag appropriations subcommittee chair meets with some northwest farmers

Farm and Ranch May 23, 2011 When Washington Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers learned that Georgia Representative Jack Kingston, the chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture was going to be in Spokane for a wedding she arranged for him to meet with some eastern Washington farmers. The McMorris Rodgers says the meeting took place Friday in Spokane.

McMorris Rodgers: “We met for a couple of hours and we had people there from wheat, potatoes, tree fruits, the cattlemen, barley, alfalfa, across the board and as well we spent some time with WSU. We focused especially on research and the importance of the research that is done at WSU in supporting agriculture, both in eastern Washington and all across the state.”

The 5th District Republican said there was discussion of just what the federal government’s role should be in agriculture and research was a priority.

McMorris Rodgers: “And it didn’t matter who we talked to, they emphasized the importance of research to keep our producers on the cutting edge. And then we talked about other programs and just had that discussion about which ones are working well. Which ones are most important. And there is recognition, at least the discussions today, I found people saying they realize things are going to change we just want to make sure we do it in a smart way.”
