Two familiar and one new face for Washington State Potato Commission

Washington Ag Today April 22, 2011 Washington State Agriculture Director Dan Newhouse has officially appointed three people to the Washington State Potato Commission. The action came on Wednesday.

Matt Harris of the Potato Commission staff says the industry recently held grower nominations and elections for the positions, which were then submitted to the Director for approval.

Harris: “Two returning commissioners; Mr. Nelson Cox who represents growers in the northern basin in District 1, Position 1. Then former commissioner Jerry Balcom who represents growers in the southern basin in Franklin, Yakima and Benton counties. His position, Position 7 in District 2. And a new commissioner Mr. Stacy Kniveton. He is replacing former commissioner Cully Easterday. Cully retired from his position and Stacy was nominated and elected to serve in that position. So it is great to have a new face on the commission and we are glad to have all three represent the growers in our state.”

The Potato Commission has nine elected positions and five appointed as well as a representative from the state agriculture department. The work the Potato Commission does on behalf of growers is funded by an assessment on producers.
