Elementary schools win greenhouses from Potato Commission and its partners

Washington Ag Today March 4, 2011 Washington elementary schools have once again benefited from the Kids Are Growing greenhouse competition coordinated by the Washington State Potato Commission and its partners. Commission Assistant Executive Director Karen Bonaudi tell us;

Bonaudi: “This year we have been able to again donate ten greenhouses to elementary schools in Washington state. This is due in large part to the generosity of GreenhouseMegastore.com who over the years has donated 50 greenhouses to this program.”

Bonaudi says the Potato Commission started this program well before the current buy local trend began.

Bonaudi: “Where people now really care where their food comes from, know a lot more about what it takes to farm and really appreciate it a lot more. We started it because we wanted kids, their families and their schools and their communities to know just what it took to raise food. So many of them think that it comes from the grocery store and that’s it. Even adults.”

The winning schools in the Kids are Growing program are in both eastern and western Washington. In addition to a greenhouse they get a one-thousand dollar grant and seed potatoes.

Bonaudi emphasizes the generosity of the program’s partners, which in addition to GreenhouseMegastore.com are Tim’s Cascade Snacks, Yoke’s Fresh Markets, KOMO TV and Fisher Radio and KVEW and the KXLY Broadcast group.
