Washington Ag Today November 19, 2010 We may still have a troubled economy but those who operate eastern Washington’s bountiful farms are helping efficient food banks make sure families in need, especially those with children or seniors, don’t go to bed hungry.

Second Harvest in Spokane, which partners with 275 neighborhood food banks and meal centers in eastern Washington and northern Idaho, has been the recipient of over 70 tons of donated fresh potatoes this fall. Rod Wieber of Second Harvest is thankful.

Wieber: “The outreach from the potato industry has just been tremendous. We received numerous donations from several growers over late summer and through the fall with hundreds of thousands of pounds of fresh potatoes. And anytime you can give a great staple like that out to hungry families and seniors that we serve, it is just a wonderful food item.”

Just before Labor Day Friehe Farms in Moses Lake delivered 27-thousand pounds of russets to the food bank’s warehouse. And of course you have to have potatoes for Thanksgiving, so the Vertically Integrated Partnership of Hirai Farms, Annie’s Fun, Sodexo and McCain Foods partnered to provide two-semi loads of fresh potatoes, nearly 120-thousand pounds, in support of TV weatherman Tom Sherry’s annual Turkey Drive. Additionally, the Washington State Potato Commission provided 15-thousand unprinted plastic bags so volunteers could package the potatoes for the holiday meals.

That’s Washington Ag Today. Brought to you in part by the Washington State Potato Commission. Nutrition today. Good health tomorrow. I’m Bob Hoff on Northwest Aginfo Net.
