Nursery crop insurance deadline; beer tax hike proposed
Washington Ag Today April 7, 2010 USDA’s Risk Management Agency advises Pacific Northwest nursery growers that May 3rd is the sales closing date for 2011 Nursery Multi-Peril Crop Insurance coverage. The insurance provides protection for wholesale nurseries producing and marketing nursery plants grown in standard nursery containers or in the field.
Current nursery policyholders may request changes in coverage and/or obtain the Pilot Nursery Grower’s Price Endorsement in Oregon and Washington prior to the May 3rd sales closing deadline.
New policy applications may be filled at any time however, all applications including those for new or amended coverage, are subject to a 30-day waiting period before coverage begins.
State Senate Democrats are now proposing an additional 50 cent a gallon tax on beer to help close a 2.8 billion dollar budget shortfall. Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Ed Murray spoke to reporters about it.
Murray” “Beer was one where are somewhat lower. I think we are number 18 or 19 in how we tax beer. So we are certainly not the highest part of states that that tax beer.”
Micro breweries would be exempt from the tax increase.
Senate and House Democrats have been negotiating over a 200-million dollar difference in their revenue packages. Republican State Senator Mark Schoesler had this suggestion for Democrats.
Schoesler: “Maybe they should try talking to the minority about where we could find 200-million dollars in savings in lieu of those taxes and finish this session.”
