Students win Science Fair awards from Washington potato growers
Farm and Ranch April 2, 2010 Seven eastern Washington students have received $100 dollar awards each for science projects. As Karen Bonaudi, Assistant Executive Director of the Washington State Potato Commission explains, the students were recognized by potato growers. Bonaudi: “This is the 4th year that the Potato Commission has recognized the winners of the Mid-Columbia Science and Engineering Fair with cash awards. We do this because so few students actually get money for doing something that is not usually done. This is kind of extra credit for them.” The science projects did not necessarily have to be about potatoes. Bonaudi: “Some of the topics that they picked were agricultural topics and some were not. But they are all having to do with science and investigation and keeping that spirit alive and we feel that is something that should be applauded.” Bonaudi says judging of the projects was conducted by researchers from the USDA Agricultural Research Service at Prosser. Bonaudi: “And so that really helps with the credibility of the event and it helps the students know that their contributions are really being valued.” An award was given to one student in every grade from the sixth through the 12th grade.
