FFA Merger

FFA Merger

FFA and 4-H programs are going to merge in Idaho. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing but why? I’ll explain in a minute. The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Agricultural Research and Extension Service budget for FY2010 was reduced  by 11.5% or $3.2 million. Additionally, a 6% holdback ($1.5 million) was imposed. These budget reductions are markedly reducing support for their research and extension programs and also resulting in elimination of many critical positions. For example, the extension specialist position which oversees the 4?H volunteer program has been eliminated.

Dr. Charlotte Eberlein Extension Director and Associate Dean says a committee has been formed to oversee the merger: They’ve been tasked with the challenge of how do we merge these two so that you minimize any disruption of either the 4-H program or Ag and Extension Education.

These happen to be  two smallest units within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Merging will help to ensure core support as well as long?term financial and program health. Moreover, they hope to be able to continue offering their youth educational opportunities through quality programming, as well as leadership and life skills training.
