Cherry's Off to a Great Start

Cherry's Off to a Great Start

Cherry’s Off to a Great Start. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

Gip Redman, Oregon Cherry Growers is optimistic about the 2009 cherry season, in fact at the moment he’s not sure this might be the one.

REDMAN: The potential is there for a big crop and we’ve been really pushing for growers to be aggressive in their pruning because we need size. If there is a large crop what’s going to go out first and for the most money is big fruit. So the potential is there.

The forecast into the next week is a warm up into the 80’s this weekend in some areas.

REDMAN: We’re getting set up for this warm weather so maybe we’ll get a good pollinating this year. Last year we had that as an issue also. So if you stack up no damage so far and good pollinizing weather there’s certainly going to be a big crop and you know my guess is we were thinking 16 million last year and we’ll easily get that this year.

Of course we are a long way from harvest but the later Spring does seem to be playing into the farmers hands.

REDMAN: Growers are a little uptight about the economy and how that’s going to affect the marketing. I think the Washington State Fruit Commission has got a good early handle on that, getting really geared up for it. I’m not as worried about marketing a really, fairly large crop. If it gets too big and the fruit too small then we’re going to have and apple situation in the cherry world.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
