Wyoming Mule Deer

Earlier this fall Justin Gibbins hunting enthusiast, took a few days off to hunt one of the greatest mule deer states in the west, Wyoming. Justin also compares the two states Idaho, and Wyoming and shares his opinion on why one area might have better bucks than another.

Justin "I go hunting down there every year with one of my friends that lives down there and he's got a great spot that we hike into and the first day this year he killed, that buck was low 190's. Just a cool, pretty much typical, but he had some extra stickers but he was a really tall beautiful deer and then his daughter killed her first mule deer, which was pretty cool too. It is interesting because I would say down in Wyoming their bucks are a lot bigger on average than ours are up here. I've killed a lot of really mature bucks up here in Bonner's and they kind of max out at 160- 170, for a score and down there the same kind of maturity level produces a 180- 190 buck on average. Just the genetics difference between here and there, they just don't get as big up here. So that's what's cool about hunting different country, you'll have different deer, like there's a lot of non-typicals down there, something you see very rarely up here."

Justin's exactly right, there are tons of factors when looking at size but most of it boils down to genetics. Of course there are many other factors including nutrients, predator pressure, habitat, and so on. Thanks again, for taking some time to share your thoughts, as always we appreciate your professional knowledge.
