New Emerging U.S. Potato Markets

The United States Potato Board is always considering new markets for U.S. potatoes — two such emerging markets are Cambodia and Miramar (formerly Burma).

Before proceeding with exporting any product there is a lot of research and consideration that goes into determining the potential for U.S. potato exports in these emerging markets.

Last fall following an earlier USDA-sponsored trade show USPB International Marketing Manager for the Frozen Potato Program Susan Weller spent time in both potential markets on the ground speaking to potential importers, quick serve restaurants. The feedback she received was promising.

Weller: "Basically single everyday I was there I talked to the trade — whether it be importers and distributors—possible importers and distributors; food service people, retailers to try and get a feel for the market. Definitely people were excited to have U.S. potatoes come into the market."

The decision was made to add both markets to next fiscal year's marketing program.

Weller: "The important thing for the potato grower to know is there is the potential for expansion and even more use of U.S. potatoes into markets such as Miramar and Cambodia."
