For the past 21 years, the National Milk Producers Federation has operated a farmer funded farmer organized self-help project called co-ops working together. This initiative aims to assist with dairy exports and competing effectively in global markets. National Milk Producers Federation, Senior Vice President of Member Services and Governance, Chris Galen,

“It’s supported by a multi-year agreement from its members cooperatives to fund the program for a period of several years, that contract period ends here at the end of 2024. So what we're looking to do is to talk to our member coops and say, Well, how should this program be different and hopefully better? In the future?”

National Milk has assembled a task force to develop concepts and proposals according to Galen and says the expanding global market for dairy trade presents several opportunities.

“Unfortunately, right now China has really stepped back and they are such a big buyer, not just dairy but all commodities, but for us. With them not buying as much dairy means we got to think more in the future about how much are we going to rely on them, other countries in Asia, what are opportunities in Africa, perhaps,”

Or even South or Central America he says. And if members choose to renew, they anticipate increased involvement and active participation while the obligation expires at the end of this year. National Milk is advocating for its renewal.
