Pastures for Pollinators Provides Good for Soil and Pollinators

For the past 15 years, Grassland Oregon has been researching and developing pollinator-friendly varieties of cover crops. Grassland Oregon co-founder Risa DeMasi says there are many benefits to using cover crops.

DeMasi: "I think that it is exciting that we are helping farmers to increase productivity by working with nature and using products that are natural. Cover crops — some of these new products are like the Swiss Army Knives of plants because they do so many wonderful things."

DeMasi shares more details about a special seed blend Pastures for Pollinators that includes a variety of flowering annual clovers that could help enhance pollinator habitat.

DeMasi: "There are 400 million acres of pasture ground in the U.S.. Talk about some low hanging fruit and it happens to sit right in the corridor where the pollinators are migrating. So using these clovers we can add things that are good for livestock, good for the soil, good for the pollinators, good for the environment and also can produce good returns for farmers. So what we are doing is making this product available — it is called Pasture for Pollinators — and we are donating all of the profits to sustainable agricultural research."
