Firearms expert Gene Kelly gives us valuable advice about our rifles and shooting techniques. One of the things that I really enjoy is long range shooting with a rifle. It is very challenging. You need to know how to gauge the wind, you have to understand the ballistics of your particular cartridge in your particular gun so that all of a sudden when you see people that chronograph the rifle round and understand what the velocity is of that particular cartridge in that particular rifle, quiet matters. When you are shooting at ranges of hundreds and hundreds of yards, and I have taken game at well over 400 yards out to as far as 600+ yards, I have practiced shooting courses up to 1000 yards. When you are dinging steel and we are talking 10 inch steel squares at 930 yards, you really have to understand the ballistics and the capability of your gun. Obviously I would not encourage someone to take that long a shot on a game animal. You want to make sure that you are going to have a solid and clean kill. But the ability to shoot at those kinds of ranges and understand what is happening ballistic light, wind drift, bullet drop etc. enables you to shoot at shorter distances with greater confidence and greater accuracy. You want to be sure that you take the trophy of a lifetime, which might be beyond the capabilities of a normal shooter.
