One of the most frequently used words in agriculture these days is sustainability. On that note, I ran into the President of the country's largest indoor, commercial, vertical farm which uses LED grow lights to replace the sun. Green Sense Farms provides what they claim to be nutritious and delicious produce that's good for people and the planet and I spoke with Green Sense Farms Pres., Robert Colangelo. " It gives our rooms a very characteristically pink appearance because we use red and blue lights which provide the wavelengths that the plants really need to promote photosynthesis. It allows us to use less electricity and those lights burn very cool. Do you do hydroponics? We use coconut core with a modified hydroponic system. We take the ground-up husk of the coconut and we see it in that. It gives integrity to the roots but it adds no nutritional or chemical value but it allows the root system to hydrate quickly and to drain quickly. Do you see this in the future being the way all farms around? Absolutely not. Farming is starting to stratify. We are not looking to take over farming. We are looking our place in the farming market where we can grow green sustainable.
