Checking in with Wyatt.

One of my favorite people to talk to is Wyatt Prescott, executive director of the Idaho Cattle Association. He’s always intuitive, passionate and informative about the subject he obviously loves a lot and that is Idaho cattle. Lately there have been whole page ads going back and forth taking potshots at the way cattle are raised in Idaho so I chatted with Wyatt. “Have you seen the war of words going back and forth accusing of drug addiction and butt out? (Laughter) Yes I have a few of those on my desk. What is the collective consciousness of the Idaho Cattle Association to these kinds of charges and allegations about antibiotics and apparently our cows are the biggest drug abusers in the country. (Laughter) That is certainly not the case. We use antibiotics in a very judicious manner to ensure that our food supply is safe but also to ensure that our animals are well cared for. We want them in the best health and condition possible. The use of antibiotics is regulated by the FDA and we use antibiotics to make the cattle heal up and feel better. It is no different than you taking antibiotics. The judicious use is the most efficient and humane way to produce livestock.
